Sochi (RWH) In the final World Cup race of the season in Sochi, Russia, which also counted as the 46th European Championships organised by the International Luge Federation (FIL), Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt have added to their list of titles, and Toni Eggert and Sascha Benecken have collected the last points needed to win the overall Viessmann World Cup. One year after their gold medal at the Olympic Winter Games on the same track, Wendl–Arlt (GER) at last won the European Championships and added gold to the three silver medals won previously in this format. The Bavarians also celebrated their 29th victory in a Viessmann World Cup. The only luge duo to have more victories to their names are Patric Leitner and Alexander Resch, also of Germany, who won a total of 34 individual World Cups. Eggert–Benecken came in seventh and collected enough points for the Joska Crystal Cup. This is the first time they have won the overall Viessmann World Cup. Peter Penz and Georg Fischler of Austria, who were in the running for an Olympic medal on this track less than a year ago and then forfeited their hopes in the second run, collected silver this time round. Bronze went to Latvia’s Andris and Juris Šics, who won silver at the 2010 Olympics and bronze at the 2014 Olympics. After the twelve races of the season, Eggert–Benecken have 1071 points. They are followed in the overall rankings by Wendl–Arlt in second with 1055 and Sics–Sics in third with 749. Quotes Tobias Arlt (GER / 2014 Olympic Champion and 2013 and 2015 World Champion) “This completes our collection of titles. But that doesn’t mean we’re ending our career: we’re not going to stop racing yet. We could joke that we’d concentrated all our efforts on the World and European Championships this season, and used the other races as rehearsals.” Toni Eggert (GER / 2012 and 2013 World Championship silver medallist) “We played it safe this race, because we didn’t want to risk anything. But it just goes to show what happens if we don’t take any risks. A World Championship might be a bit more prestigious, but this is our greatest success yet.” Peter Penz (AUT / 2012 European Champion, 2015 World Championship silver medallist and 2012 World Championship bronze medallist) “Things went much better this year than they did a year ago at the Olympics. Our result does sort of make up for that.”
