Will Natalie Geisenberger score a hat-trick? - The co-favourites Taubitz and Egle stumble

Natalie Geisenberger, Beijing 2022

Yanqing (FIL) Is Natalie Geisenberger on her way to the third Olympic victory in women's singles? At the half-time of the Olympic race at the Yanqing Sliding Center, the chances are good. After the first two runs, the 34-year-old German is leading by 0.208 seconds ahead of her team-mate Anna Berreiter and Tatyana Ivanova (Russian Olympic Committee), who is 0.591 seconds behind Geisenberger. Two Austrians follow behind with Hannah Prock (0.669 seconds back) and Lisa Schulte (0.772).

Similar to the men's race, the exit of curve 13 was the key point in the 1475-metre-long Olympic track. Already in the first run all chances for a medal were gone for the co-favourite Madeleine Egle. The Austrian, who had set a new start record in 7.164 seconds, tipped over but managed to pull herself back onto her sled. Nevertheless, her 59.390 seconds meant only the 17th fastest time. Her half-time position: seventh place, 1.010 seconds behind.

Julia Taubitz fared even worse in run two. The overall World Cup winner slipped on her stomach next to her sled after a fall - 1:00.075 minutes. Her track record in 58.345 seconds from the first run didn't help her much. With a gap of 1.595 seconds to Geisenberger, the 25-year-old in 14th place has no more chances for a medal.
The decision will be made on Tuesday starting at 19.50 hrs local time (12.50 hrs CET) in the final two runs.
