Winterberg (RWH) The host town was decided 18 months ago, and now the exact dates and the official logo have also been revealed. The artificial ice track in Winterberg is set to host the 48th International Luge Federation (FIL) World Championships from 25-27 January 2019. The organisers unveiled the official logo for the World Championships ahead of the first round of the new Viessmann World Cup season.

“We would like to thank the Luge Federation for confirming our preferred dates so early. We can now ensure that all our plans and preparations are completed on time”, said Rainer Nittel, managing director of the Erholungs- und Sportzentrum Winterberg GmbH, which will co-host the championships alongside BRC Hallenberg bobsleigh and luge club.

The 2019 World Championships in Winterberg will be the 48th FIL World Championships and the 15th to be held in Germany. Winterberg will be hosting for the third time, having previously staged the 1989 and 1991 events. In 1991 the Hochsauerland town deputised for Sigulda at short notice when Latvia was unable to host the World Championships for political reasons.

Winterberg was given the nod to host the World Championships at the 63rd FIL Congress, which was held in PyeongChang, Korea, in June 2015. Winterberg fended off its nearest rival Sochi, Russia, by 23 votes to 15, after Lake Placid was eliminated in the first round.
