Calgary (RWH) World Champion Wolfgang Kindl is at the top of his game. At the Viessmann World Cup race in the Canadian city of Calgary, the gold medallist from the 2017 World Championships celebrated his third win in succession and also extended his lead in the overall rankings.. On the 1988 Olympic track at Canada Olympic Park (COP), Kindl, who finished ninth in the Olympics, pushed Russia’s Roman Repilov back into second place. Repilov missed out on the Viessmann World Cup race in Whistler (CAN) last weekend following problems with his visa. Third place in Calgary went to the Olympic Champion David Gleirscher, marking his first podium finish in a Viessmann World Cup race.

Felix Loch – the 2010 and 2014 Olympic Champion – messed up his first run but managed to climb from 13th place to fourth after securing the best time in the second heat. At the halfway point in proceedings, his team mate Sebastian Bley was still in second place, before eventually falling back to seventh place. Nevertheless, the German Championship bronze medallist still managed to achieve his best result to date on his sixth World Cup appearance.

Kindl, who won the BMW Sprint World Cup in Innsbruck-Igls and also won the Viessmann World Cup race in Whistler, now holds a clear lead in the overall standings with 370 points. Felix Loch and his team mate Johannes Ludwig are in joint second (265), though they are already 100 points behind the leader. The Olympic bronze medallist Ludwig finished sixth in Calgary behind Kevin Fischnaller (ITA).

Quotes

Wolfgang Kindl (AUT / 2017 World Champion, 2017 Sprint World Champion, bronze medallist at the 2015 and 2016 World Championships):

“I have been doing pretty well all week. The competition within the Austrian team definitely contributes to our strong performance. Competition is what keeps us thriving.”

Roman Repilov (RUS / overall winner in the 2016/2017 Viessmann World Cup, silver medallist in the 2017 World Championships)

“I had a few problems in the second heat, especially at the bottom of the track. I’ve got the track record in Lake Placid; I think I can win there next week.”

David Gleirscher (AUT / 2018 Olympic Champion, 2018 Olympic bronze medallist in the team relay)

“I am so happy to have got a podium finish. I did pretty well here last year but a mistake stopped me from finishing higher. A lot has changed since last year; my media profile, in particular, has grown a lot.”
