Olang (ck) - After the new competition format has passed its first test with flying colors last weekend, the second race in the WÜRZ Energy World Cup is held according to the original rules. However, there will be something new in Olang/Valdaora (ITA), too. For the first time a team event will be part of the world cup, so far this event has only been held at World and recently also European Championships. One participant of each discipline is allowed in the team, one man, one woman and one double. Olang has earned a reputation as a traditional organizer of world cup races over many years and the track is well known among the athletes. Russia’s serial winner Ekatharina Lavrentjeva is always happy when a race in Valdaora finds its way on the race schedule: “Olang is my second home”, she says. Five times already she has claimed a spot on the podium in Olang, even though she had to settle for the second place in last year’s world cup, when Renate Gietl (ITA) won the race. Last year’s men’s race was a duel between generations. Patrick Pigneter and Anton Blasbichler (both ITA) were fighting for the top spot on the podium, eventually Pigneter made the race. However, a remake can be expected, as Anton Blasbichler, who is in his 20th world cup season, can easily keep most of his younger colleagues in check. The program in Olang starts on Friday with training runs in all three disciplines, Saturday at 9am the doubles will have their first competition run and open the race. The last event will be the team event on Sunday.
