43rd FIL Luge Worlds in Altenberg highlight of the 2011-2012 season
Herzogenaurach (pps) The 43rd Luge World Championships of the International Luge Federation, FIL, to take place in Altenberg, Germany, are the absolute highlight of the 2011-2012 season. The recently modernised artificially-refrigerated track will host luge World Championships for the second time after 1996 on February 11-12, 2012. The European champions will then be crowned on the first artificially-refrigerated track in Paramonovo, Russia, on February 25-26, 2012. Altogether, there will be nine Viessmann Luge World Cup events to be carried out during the upcoming season. On the occasion of the Meeting of the FIL Executive Board in Herzogenaurach, Germany, last weekend the FIL Sports Calendar was approved.
For the first time, the Calendar features the Youth Olympic Games (YOG), which will be held in Innsbruck, Austria, on January 13-22, 2012. Additionally, there are six junior World Cup events for the young luge athletes.
The new season in the Viessmann Luge World Cup will kick off on the Olympic luge track in Innsbruck-Igls on November 26-27, 2011. The next event on the programme is Whistler, Canada, on December 9-10, 2011, where the 44th FIL Luge World Championships will be carried out in 2013. The host of the third World Cup event is not yet determined. A decision should be taken at the end of May. After the Christmas break the World Cup series moves to Germany with the stops in Koenigssee (January 5-6, 2012), Oberhof (January 14-15, 2012) and Winterberg (January 21-22, 2012). The naturally refrigerated luge track in St. Moritz, Switzerland, will then host the luge elite for the first time after the Worlds in 2000 on January 28-29, 2012. After the season’s highlight in Altenberg follow the Viessmann Luge World Cup event in Sigulda, Latvia (February 18-19, 2012) as well as the European Championships in Paramonovo, which will additionally attain World Cup status.
